Treating Erectile Dysfunction with Medication

Erectile dysfunction causes a great deal of anxiety for any man who experiences it. When it is a temporary condition, such as when a man is very tired or suffering from a short-term illness, then the man knows that it will clear up soon and he just needs to live with it for that brief time.
But many men experience erectile dysfunction on an on-going basis. This then leaves the man feeling that he is less than a man: men are so wrapped up in their sexuality: they cannot see themselves as a full man, with an intact identity, if they cannot achieve firm erections as often as they would like. Their self-esteem is damaged, they become uncomfortable socially, and their intimate relationships suffer.

What can they do about it?

Well, if a man has been indulging in unwise lifestyle choices, such as smoking, he can decide to change his living patterns. Giving up smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation only, eating healthily and getting enough sleep may return many men to their normal sexual functioning. If he is in an unhappy relationship, then resolving the issues by talking with his partner or going for relationship counseling will also often remove the anxieties that have had the negative effect on his ability to achieve an erection.
But for many men, erectile dysfunction is a condition that lasts for a long time, or is permanent, and no amount of healthy lifestyle choices will correct it. Such men often turn to homeopathy and other natural remedies to help them in the hope that mother nature will enable them to function normally again. For some men, natural remedies do give them the relief they are looking for: but for others, such remedies provide no help.
The fortunate thing is that for such men, there is help available in the form of medication prescribed by doctors. And the fortunate thing is that such medicines have few side effects, and on the contrary have many beneficial effects in addition to relieving the erectile dysfunction.
A lot of men know that their doctors can prescribe such medicines, but are reluctant to visit the doctor to obtain a prescription. Why should this be? Firstly, men are never keen to admit to themselves that they have an erection problem, let alone to another person. They find it easier just to ignore the problem and pretend it will go away. If they go to a doctor to tell him that they have the problem, they face up to it, which is quite painful.
Men are often reluctant to use medication of any kind. It is a fact that men are just not as good as women about looking after their health and taking medicines: and when it comes to erectile dysfunction men are also reluctant to take medication even though they realise it will help them in their intimate relationships.

What are these medicines and what are their effects and side effects?

The most commonly used medicines belong to a group called PDE5 inhibitors (the full name is phosphodiesterase type 5  inhibitors). These medications have an effect on the blood vessels in the penis, promoting blood flow so that the penis can achieve and maintain a good quality erection. There are several different ones, each having a slightly different chemical effect: so if a man finds that one of them gives him headaches (the most common side effect) then his doctor can prescribe a different one.
If for some reason a man cannot take any of the PDE5 inhibitors, and there are always a few people who cannot take medicines which are generally well tolerated and safe, or if for some medical reason they do not work, then there are other remedies. There are medications which can be inserted or injected into the penis, and as a last resort there are rods which can be implanted into it.
But most men with erectile dysfunction find that the PDE5 inhibitors work extremely well. Apart from the headaches already mentioned, a few men find that particularly one of this group of medicines causes facial flushing. But generally the effects are beneficial: some men find that their heart conditions are partly relieved, as the medicines act by improving blood flow in the heart as well.
When one considers the improvement in the quality of a man's life when his sexual functioning is restored with the use of the PDE5 inhibitors, then it is clear that this is one group of medicines, whereas not life-saving, provides enormous benefits to the men taking it. When a man's self-esteem is restored and he feels more confident and secure, and his intimate relationship improves, then he is able to perform better at work and also in his social life and as a community member.
